Cherokee Park
There are 94 homes in this exclusive "West of the Trail" neighborhood. Its location, is just south of downtown Sarasota Florida and close to the hospital district. Wide, quiet streets and sidewalks are lined with oak tress and tropical vegetation. Separated from Osprey Avenue by a stucco wall and gate posts with decorative tile work depicting a Cherokee rose, the subdivision was originally developed in 1926. Developer J.C. Brown's idea for Cherokee Park was a neighborhood filled with homes designed in the Spanish, Moorish, or Italian styles of architecture. Due to the real estate bust of the late 1920's, his dream was never realized. As of 1937, there were only 3 homes built in the community. Browns original home named Cherokee Lodge was demolished in 1962 to make way for the bay front properties that exist today. In 1940, the western portion of the Cherokee Park development was redeveloped in order to include South, West and North West drives and a strip of land was set aside for a park along the bay front. Later, this bay front park was sold and subdivided, along with the 12 acres occupied by J.C Browns original home. The homes in the neighborhood make up a good mix of new Cherokee park real estateconstruction and older homes as well. This lends even more to the old Florida atmosphere. There are a wide range of architectural styles in Cherokee Park, traditional, Mediterranean and contemporary. Homes here range from 1800 to over 8000 square feet. Prices in Cherokee Park range from the $800,000s for interior houses to over $8,000,000 for bayfront properties.
